What is NBC?
Simply, an acronym for
NUCLEAR, BIOLOGICAL, CHEMICAL DEFENSE.
NBC weapons are select and
immensely lethal. NBC weapons are extremely portable and accessible.
A single NBC weapon can be used to destroy thousands of people or
can be easily used in selective attack. Their portability allows
them to be easily delivered against civilian population. The ease of
accessibility to these agents means that despite the government’s
best effort at prevention, these agents may fall into terrorist
hands. These characteristics combine to make NBC agents one of the
single most serious long-term security threats facing our culture
today. We are vulnerable to mass loss of life caused by an attack
involving NBC agents.
Former Director of Central
Intelligence, James R. Woolsey stated, “the prospect of terrorists
acquiring and using weapons of mass destruction is one of the
greatest threats facing the United States today and in the future.”
There are four portals of
entry through which these agents enter the body: nose, eyes, mouth
and skin. The single most important piece of individual protection
against and NBC agent is the protective mask.
